The cut-off for linking Aadhaar and PAN cards is quickly approaching. To keep their PAN cards active, all PAN card holders must link them to their Aadhaar cards. It is important to note that linking Aadhaar and PAN is mandatory for income tax purposes. Failing to do so may result in difficulties when filing income tax returns or other financial transactions.
On or before June 30, 2023, taxpayers must link their Aadhaar IDs to their Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards in accordance with government regulations. If taxpayers don’t connect their Aadhaar to their PAN cards, the PAN cards will be useless starting on July 1st, 2023.

How do I check the status of the Aadhaar Card PAN Card Link online?
There are two ways to check whether your PAN card and Aadhaar are connected:
Without logging into the Income Tax portal, check the Aadhaar PAN card link status.
- Go to the income tax e-filing website.
- Click the “Link Aadhaar Status” link under the “Quick Links” heading.
- Click the “View Link Aadhaar Status” button after entering the “PAN number” and “Aadhaar Number.”
- Upon successful validation, a message describing your Link Aadhaar status will be shown. When your PAN card and Aadhaar are linked, the message “Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar” will appear.
- The message “Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation” will show up on the screen when your Aadhaar-PAN link is active. Please visit the “Link Aadhaar Status” link on the homepage later to check the status.
- The message “PAN not linked with Aadhaar” will show up on the screen if your Aadhaar and Pan card are not linked. To link your Aadhaar with PAN, kindly click “Link Aadhaar.”

Access the Income Tax portal to check the status of the Aadhaar PAN card link.
- Enter the Income Tax e-filing portal by logging in.
- Select “Dashboard” from the homepage, then select “Link Aadhaar Status.”
- Additionally, you can visit “My Profile” and select the “Link Aadhaar Status” option.
- The Aadhaar number will be visible once your PAN card and Aadhaar have been linked. ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ will be shown if your PAN card and Aadhaar are not linked.
- You will need to check the status later when your request to link your Aadhaar with your PAN card is still being processed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for validation.

Click “View Link Aadhaar Status” after entering your PAN and Aadhaar numbers. The status of the PAN-Aadhaar linking will be shown on the screen.
PAN Aadhaar Link Status Check by SMS
- Send the message “UIDPAN” along with your 12-digit Aadhaar and 10-digit PAN numbers.
- Send the SMS to either 56161 or 567678.
- Wait for the government service to respond.
- The message “Aadhaar is already associated with PAN (number) in ITD database” will show up when the Aadhaar is linked with the PAN. We appreciate you using our services.
- The message will read, “Aadhaar is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database,” if the Aadhaar and PAN are not linked. We appreciate you using our services.
What happens if do not link PAN-Aadhaar
(i) The individual is not permitted to file a return using an invalid PAN.
(ii) Pending returns will not be processed.
(iii) Inactive PANs cannot receive pending refunds.
(iv) Once the PAN is no longer active, pending proceedings, such as those involving defective returns, cannot be finished.
(v) As PAN becomes inactive, tax will need to be withheld at a higher rate.
In addition to the foregoing, PAN is an essential part of the KYC process for all kinds of financial transactions.
Fees for Aadhaar PAN card linking
Until March 31, 2022, PAN-Aadhaar linking was free. A Rs. 500 fine was imposed if you linked your PAN to your Aadhaar after March 31, 2022, but before June 30, 2022.
However, there is a Rs. 1,000 fine for linking a PAN with an Aadhaar card after June 30, 2022. Therefore, before June 30, 2023, you must first pay the Rs. 1,000 penalty to link your Aadhaar with your PAN.
PAN cards will stop working on July 1 2023 if the PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked by June 30, 2023.
Aadhar PAN Link Last Date
The last date for Link Aadhaar card with pan is 30th June 2023, after that your PAN will be inactive.
How to link Pan-Aadhaar with penalty
- Go to the e-Filing portal’s home page and select Link Aadhaar from the Quick Links list.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number
- Click on Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
- To receive an OTP, enter your PAN, PAN confirmation, and mobile number.
- You will be directed to the e-Pay Tax page after your OTP has been verified.
- Click on Proceed on the Income Tax tab.
- Choose the AY 2023–2024 and Other Receipts (500) as the type of payment, then click Continue.
- The appropriate amount will already be filled in under Others.
As an alternative, if you have a bank account that is not supported by e-Pay Tax, please follow these instructions:
- Click the link below to be redirected to the Protean (NSDL) portal from the e-Pay tax page.
- The Protean portal will be redirected to you. Under Challan No./ITNS 280, click Proceed.
- Select Type of Payment as 500 and Tax applicable as 0021.
- Provide other mandatory details and Proceed.
- When paying the late fee, please choose the Assessment Year 2023–24.
- Your Aadhaar number and PAN can be linked on the e-Filing Portal after the fee has been paid.
Who should link their PAN card to their Aadhaar?
Taxpayers who have PAN cards are required to link them to their Aadhaar cards in accordance with Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act.
Thus, by 30 June 2023, all taxpayers must voluntarily link their PANs to their Aadhaar cards or face having their PAN cards rendered useless.
However, since they fall under the exempt category, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), people over the age of 80, residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir do not need to link their Aadhaar with PAN cards.
To determine whether your Aadhaar and PAN card are linked, check the status of your Aadhaar-PAN link. If not, make sure to link it by June 30, 2023, to avoid your PAN card becoming invalid.
